This tool accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF, HEIC and TIFF files. Everything is decoded by your own browser, so the formats available depend on what your browser can open - which for HEIC in particular varies between Safari and other browsers.
Because the image is rebuilt from raw pixels, EXIF metadata such as camera details, timestamps and GPS coordinates does not carry into the result. Orientation is applied to the pixels first, so photographs stay the right way up. Embedded colour profiles are also dropped and the output is saved as sRGB, which can shift colours slightly in wide-gamut photographs. Animated files are refused rather than being flattened to a single frame.
No. The image is decoded, resized and re-encoded by your own browser in a Web Worker, so it never travels over the network. There is no upload wait and no queue behind other people's files, which is why a large image starts processing instantly.

JPG, PNG and WebP compress and save back to the same format. GIF and BMP can also be opened and are saved in the closest supported format, which the tool tells you before you download. Support for AVIF, HEIC and TIFF depends on your browser rather than on us: Chrome and Edge open AVIF but not HEIC or TIFF, while Safari opens HEIC. The tool checks what your browser can actually decode and says so plainly instead of reporting a valid photo as damaged. Animated files are not accepted, because processing would keep only the first frame.
No. This tool works one frame at a time, so an animated file would come out as a single still image. Rather than silently destroying the animation, animated GIF and WebP files are detected and refused with an explanation. Still images in those formats work normally.
It depends on the image. Photographs typically drop by 60-80% at quality 75 with no difference most people can see. Screenshots, logos and flat graphics compress less as JPG but shrink a lot as PNG with fewer colours, or as WebP.

JPG and WebP are lossy, so lower quality settings discard more detail. At quality 70-80 the loss is usually invisible at normal viewing size. PNG is lossless, so it shrinks by reducing the number of colours instead.
