Every photo a camera or phone takes carries a hidden record of how it was made: the device, the lens, the exposure settings, the moment the shutter opened and, very often, the exact coordinates where you were standing. This tool reads that record out of the file and shows it in plain language, without the file ever leaving your device.
This tool accepts JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF, HEIC and TIFF files. Everything is decoded by your own browser, so the formats available depend on what your browser can open - which for HEIC in particular varies between Safari and other browsers.
EXIF stands for Exchangeable Image File Format. It is a block of information a camera writes into the image file alongside the picture itself: which camera and lens were used, the aperture and shutter speed, the date and time, the orientation the camera was held at, and on most phones the GPS coordinates. It travels with the file wherever the file goes.
No, and it does not need to be. EXIF lives in the first few kilobytes of the file, so this tool reads those bytes directly in your browser and never decodes or transmits the picture. You can watch your browser's network panel while you use it and see that no request carries your photo, or the camera details and coordinates read out of it.
Because phones record location by default unless you turn it off. The coordinates are usually accurate to within a few metres, which is enough to identify a home, a school or a workplace from a single shared photo. Most social networks strip this on upload, but files sent by email, chat or cloud link usually keep it.
JPG, PNG and WebP, which is where the overwhelming majority of EXIF is found. Other formats can be opened and their dimensions read, but the tool will say plainly that it does not inspect their metadata rather than implying the file is clean.
Cameras do not rotate pixels when you turn them sideways. They store the picture as the sensor saw it and add a tag saying how far to turn it for display. That is why a photo can look correct in one app and sideways in another, and it is why removing EXIF from a rotated photo needs care.
