JPEG is the format most photographs are stored in, and it is also the one that responds best to compression. Drop a JPG in, choose how aggressive to be, and download a much smaller file that still looks like the original.
This tool accepts JPG files. Everything is decoded by your own browser, so the formats available depend on what your browser can open - which for HEIC in particular varies between Safari and other browsers.
Because the image is rebuilt from raw pixels, EXIF metadata such as camera details, timestamps and GPS coordinates does not carry into the result. Orientation is applied to the pixels first, so photographs stay the right way up. Embedded colour profiles are also dropped and the output is saved as sRGB, which can shift colours slightly in wide-gamut photographs. Animated files are refused rather than being flattened to a single frame.
No. Your JPG is read straight from disk into the page and compressed there. Nothing about it reaches a server, which matters more than usual for photographs: a JPG straight off a camera usually carries GPS coordinates in its metadata.

Quality 75 is a good default for photos on the web and typically cuts file size by around 70%. Use 85-90 for images that will be printed or cropped later, and 60-65 when size matters more than fine detail, such as email attachments.
